What is Won Moving Meditation?
Won Moving meditation is the awakening practice for finding our true-self by uniting mind and body, not seeing them as separate things. To govern our mind, we should have the wisdom that comes from observing the body. To use the body well, the mind should keep equanimity.
Won Moving Meditation helps us not to be biased by abstract philosophies or theories of meditation, and to release the physical suffering accumulated by practicing seated meditation, separating mind from body, for a long time. Having the same goal as seated meditation, Won Moving Meditation is the special practice of physical movement and mental movement, harmoniously, without straying or suffering. When the body is changed, through Moving Meditation, there will be a change in one’s energy. Then, physiological harmony will take place. Furthering spiritual relaxation and inner restoration, one can recover one’s own original nature.
In contrast to exercises using tensed muscles, Moving Meditation helps not only to relax joints, muscles, organs and nerves but also to achieve mental relaxation and emancipation from attachments. When the body is overly tensed for long periods, disease may be fostered. Practicing by oneself with strong desire and attachment can cause diseases.
Unlike exercise to strengthen certain parts of the body, Moving Meditation helps us to ultimately reach equanimity of mind through the wholesome balance and harmony of body, energy, and breath. As the body’s unbalance and disharmony become discomfort and disease, by realizing that the selfish mind and biased mind will bring up conflict and suffering, one attains equanimity by practicing integrity and altruism. Moving Meditation does not need excessive concentration, but just by observing the movement and sensation of the present moment, the spirit does not dwell on either past or future. As the practice becomes familiar, one can unite mind and body using only the utmost gentle mind in steering one’s natural energy and motion.
Although Moving Meditation is a key for health, it induces the natural healing power which human beings originally have within. Although it doesn’t have any adherence to philosophy or religion, it awakens the latent ability and pursues intrinsic matters, uniting with truth, that is, right understanding of oneself and the universe. As Moving Meditation allows us to attain peace and calmness through live movements, while sitting, standing, lying down, and walking, we can keep our original mind. Whenever we talk, do not talk, are busy or not busy, we are able to have a united and righteous mind.
Won Moving Meditation programs include Yin Yang Mudra, Buddha’s Mudra, and Warm Heart Supple Body for sitting practice and Shipsang Meditation, One Circle Meditation, and Sŏn Yoga for standing practice. The principles of Tai Chi, Qi gong and yoga are synthesized in the practice.
